You are right Chris on both counts. Capt Mitchell was in England . He used this plan to install the amplifier in the new aluminium box called the Wire-5 . Earlier house type 15 Cwt trucks had boxes with steel sides and canvas roofs .

Extra ground wire on buss bar
Thanks to Gord Falk’s pictures i noticed there was an extra grounding wire on the buss bar under the wireless table . Here it is . That box was very well thought out and i venture to say overbuilt ! In the pictures we see the two power cables comming down behind the radio , to the left the two battery cables powering the starter on the Onan generator , the rods holding that particular battery and to the right the post -war CPP-2 i installed in the box to provide 12 volt power to the No 19 Set . When i will install the amplifier unit i will power both the No 19 sets and the amplifier with 120 AC Volts from the geny or an outside outlet with house power.

Grounding the buss bar
I finished grounding the buss bar as per Gord’s pictures of an original box . I turned the No 19 set on and immediately noticed better reception with less static . I have tested the No 19 set on a regular basis at the same time of day and on the same frequency ranges for the past month or so . You are to remember that the set , the carrier , the table and the batteries are all grounded to frame through this buss bar .

Grounding truck to ground
Hi , i have no wireless truck experience so i have a stupid question : How do you ground the truck to ground ? Is it as simple as connecting a wire to a frame bolt to a wire and connecting it to a metal spike in the ground ? Manuals speak of grounding the truck to improve reception / transmission over the wireless set , that’s why i am asking .Why does it help ? I have operated on the same frequency ranges in airplanes and we ain’t grounded to earth and it works fine . I must add we have static «*wicks*» on the trailing edges to dissipate static that accumulates on the airframe in precipitation. Just asking .

1 st radio test with 12 Ft aerial
I had a strong & clear signal 5/5 from CHU Canada on 3300 Mhz . The transmitter is located near Ottawa ( Nepean ) Ontario 418 Km away as the bird flies from the truck . Pretty impressive . The power of the transmitter is 3 Kw ( a lot compared to the 250 /1000 W of many amateur radio sets ) on that freq but still it was mid day and conditions are not the best at that time . That with the standard war time 3 piece antenna ! I used the standard base with wooden spacer and spring clip to hold the antenna rod thight . I used house power so the power supply was grounded to the outlet . When i ´ll use the batteries i will ground the truck . I did not try running the truck engine nor the generators while operating the radio , another thing to try later .

writing table
Thank you for your nice words Bruce . Here i finaly realised the sliding writing table under the wireless was made out of wood .So i cut to size some 3/4 inch plywood and covered it with similar sized Masonite for smothness and finish .

Here is another shot . I am starting to work on the metal drawer to goes to the left of this writing table . It slides out on the same rails as the writing table to the left of it . It has a lock to secure code books i presume , at least that’s what we did in my time ...I put in a little Jimmy aide memoire in the picture to bring joy to my friends who used to be signalers by trade .

I'm trying to think what stationery would be kept in the vehicle, The operator would need: Wireless Log (either a tear-off pad (probably) or an actual book) Message Pad(s) (AF C2128 or AF C2136 (Small) + AF C2136 (Large)) Wireless Diagram sheet (Network Diagram with NIS and callsigns for the day) Authentication code sheet for the day. Lots of pencils. The clerk would need: Signal Register (AF B2504) Envelopes for message forms Carbon paper D/R Docket book Other forms, depending on whether he was doing the work of a Signal Office or just message distribution. (I need to go and read the various "Signal Office Working" publications again.) Chris. |

Thank you Chris, that is very useful information . I made up an improvised ground for the truck . It helped and reception was improved by a factor of 2 . Still using 3x 4 feet F rods . Amazing what little details will do !

Wireless operator
Here is the restorer happy as can be to have everything working ! i am feeding the No 19 on battery no 2 . Next test is feeding the radio with battery No 1 while charging battery No 2 with one of the Chorehorses ( upper-lower) in the charger compartment and then alternate the batteries and chargers . I expect some noise in the headsets and maybe interference on the frequencies but we never know the grounding might help.We must not forget that only the post war Chorehorsed were suppressed .

I'm assuming it uses Leads, Aerial, No.3 and that is secured to the front wall and roof of the body with a suitable number of 'P' clips. (A spare cable (No.2 or No.3) and Aerial Base No.9A will probably be included in the CES for demounted use.) Best regards, Chris. |
