Default reality check ?

The pic of the MW Bedford is a reality check for us . It is covered in grime and oil stains and it has that 'used' look to it that we as restorers don't want. Sure, the cars looked nice when issued, but how long did that last . Having said that, the vehicle behind looks to be well kept !

A generic vehicle of U.S. origin , assembled all over the world !

Just my opinion

Mike,

How could I argue with one of Australia´s experts? Googled some images to convince myself, concluded you must be right. Thanks for being eagle-eyed!

On the Life web site i have been putting all manner of military titles in the search box for instance Army division, brigade, company etc and all the usual vehicle types it seems to work but i still draw blanks every so often i find most results come from useing American terms rather than european, try putting in names of battles that produces some items
cheers

Les,

Try adding "1940s" to your search query, it helps narrowing down the number of found pictures which is limited to 200 for each search. Also, excluding words by using "-", e.g. "-truck", helps.

Thanks Hanno
This really is a strange site to navigate, you mention 1940 well this comes upoften in the links click on it and you get nowt then it has been mentioned put in the life photographers, now that sounds a good idea untill you do it and the site seems reluctant to regonise its own people once again nothing i think i located about 8 to 10 names and 4 worked same with the links that appear when a photo is enlarged only about 10% work still i managed to save about 200 items of interest but still not much from the 20.000.000
cheers
Les

Had to come back on this one guys, just spent last hour plus trying to locate photos in the search, used as many well known american names, places, battles and theatre of operations etc and well you have guessed it it cant regonise any thing. even the photos and dates on the home page dont work. My opinion is they have no idea how to load the site and with Goggle involved its hard to believe or they are pulling plonkers estimating 20.000.000 photos on the site what do you think

Les I used the 1940, 41, 42 etc behind things like Army & New Guinea or Normandy and got heaps of photos often up to the 200 limit.

Another thing to remember is you can get a real large image by clicking on the link at the bottom of the large photo that shows up when you click on the thumb nail.

Thumbs down

One of the things that worries me is that if Google is so obviously deficient here, what does that say about its' abilities in general ?

Why also, the 200 hits restriction ? The most powerful search engine in the world and it's less useful for shooting off at tangents than the IWM or the Canadian archives (to name but two)

A missed opportunity, I feel.

Rich

Here are a couple more, featuring LVTs w/Jeep Ambulances, Churchill, Shermans and Cromwell.

No idea what the original captions were, they were sent to me by someone else.

Rick,

Like Maurice said, it must be a Sherman of some sort.

Not sure if they are using it to fill a crater or are trying to get it out!

Here's another picture of the same scene.
