Collar badge
Clive,
The centre badge is indeed a right collar badge. As for Sgt. badges, I have a photo supplied to me by Ed Sawchuck of BSquad, troop 9. It shows a Sgt. (I do not know his name) wearing what looks to be a 1/2 size badge on the stripes of his right sleeve. Pic attached. From the shape, and the resolution is really indistinct , but it could actually be a right facing collar badge? I have heard it said that they were used for that purpose but have no evidence other than this photo. The collar badge in my earlier post is in Chris Brooker's collection, I have never seen one in person and never seen one or a pair offered for sale (yet). Mark, thanks for posting that drawing, I have never seen that before. Are there anymore drawings from Gaunt or is that it? It is interesting that the modelling of the kangaroo's head more closely resembles the collar badge than the actual Cap badge. Bill. |

The drawing is that which was submitted by Lt-Col Churchill (reference para 3) in his letter of 16 Nov 44. I remember seeing another sketch but I'll have to dig it out and compare them, they could be the same, I can't remember off hand. Cheers

Once again I am truly amazed at the amount of information that can be gathered together using this website. Bill I will get in touch with you soon. It would be so great to one day have a museum for the Kangaroo's.
I once again tip my hat to Bill, Hanno, Geoff and everyone else for getting as much information on the 1CACR however obscure out there.

Cloth title approval
Mark, is there any further documentation for the approval of the shoulder title in cloth?

...nice photo...
:
ooohh, the number of people jumping at the chance to bid on this is astounding! If you squint your eyes just so, you can sort of see this is another "common as dirt" restrike. One other thing regarding the description of this item. I see it repeatedly quoted that the regiment disbanded on May 11, 1945. It was not. It was disbanded on June 20, 1945 (not that anyone really cares) Bill. |

New Repro to watch out for...
Hi Hanno,
Lots of repros on the market these days, I suppose with the very inflated price of genuine badges pushing the $500 US range it makes it attractive to find and sell the repros. NOTE: The original die for the late war/post war variety (#2) is still alive and well in the UK and making BRAND NEW restrikes. A couple of months ago these started showing up on Ebay. UK. They are currently being sold for what they are, "restrikes" but a few years from now who knows what some unsuspecting person will make of them. I bought one as a sample for my archives and they are actaully a very well made badge!? Seems to be good, solid brass (unlike the common gilding metal variety like Hanno posted) but with a slider not lugs, this is the big tip off that it is new (and not genuine). Pic attached. Bill. |

The Real McCoy
Lots of fakes out there of all the 1CACR insignia pieces except one... the collar badges!
Too rare I suppose for anyone to get a hold of and make copies... approx. one hundred pairs made. I was very fortunate to connect with a dealer that had just brought this matched pair to Canada from a collection in Holland. Sometimes you do come across the genuine article! Bill. |

A damaged badge..
Hi Hanno,
Your mystery bage looks a "King's Colonial" Badge that has had the "Australia" scroll cut off the bottom. I see intact badges for sale on Ebay quite frequently. In fact there is one for sale right now... Pre. W.W.I. KING'S COLONIALS ( AUSTRALIA SQUD) BADGE. Item number: 6627636076 |

A question for our Australian members
Over the years I have frequently seen these small Brass kangaroo figures for sale on Ebay. They originate in Australia, and always sell for a pretty penny. This one just sold for $175 US Dollars??
One side is stamped IH (International Harvester) which as a prairie kid, I recognize that name. The other side is stamped "Geelong"... ??? Is this a farm implement promotional piece or perhaps a hood ornament of some sort (like the Mack Trucks "Bulldog"? The question is, what are these kangaroos? And why are they so valuable/desirable?? Bill. |

Record price set for Kangaroo collar badges.
In the past, we've noted a few high prices for Kangaroo Cap Badges, but a matched pair of left and right, brass collars sold at auction May 12 for $1400 Canadian!!
(And NO it wasn't me who had the extremely deep pockets, my maximum bid of $850 wasn't even in the ball park!?! Luckily I already have an example pair for which I paid far, far less!) An extraordinary price for two very tiny pieces of brass, a single collar badge is less than an inch high! More details on the auction at my website: http://www.canadiankangaroos.ca/Site/News/News.html Bill. |

Here is a photo of Lt-Col Churchill wearing Service Dress which displays his cap and collar badges. The WWII Campaign medal ribbon had not yet been approved so he wears the oak leaf emblem of the Mention in Despatch directly on his tunic, after his other service ribbons.
