Euan,
My fluid transfer pump is black? I'll dig it out and put up a photo at some stage. Doesn't you box belong to the recuperation air pump that fits onto the bracket on the trail, box is strapped onto the limber tray. Rob Nixon put some good photos up a while ago.

A cartage deal for my 25pr parts is all but struck now, and I'm relieved to say the parts will come to me, as opposed to me going to them. Timing will be to suit the carrier. He quoted a quite good price, so I'm happy to fit in with his travels.
Once i have my pieces, I will REALLY need to sort workshop space to setup for fabricating the trails. I have a plan. Still a great number of parts (or portion thereof) to be acquired. The search continues. If you have anything 25pr for sale, especially parts for trails, carriage, and cradle, do let me know, please. Thanks

Behind the scenes. #1
I imagine it's time to reveal a few things happening behind the scenes.
You may recall I made a tentative set of skeletal trails, needing sides fabricated and welded into place. Well, they've progressed no further, and for a very good reason. Before going ahead with that, I need a mass of accurate measurements and some original brackets which would be extremely difficult to copy (for me, at least). Earning my extreme gratitude, a fellow MLU member in UK put me in touch with a gentleman here in Australia, who has a front section (firing front) of an original 25pr trails set he was prepared to sell me. The section had been used as a range target at some point, and seems to have been on the receiving end of a jolly intense game of 'Cop Your Whack'. And quite a few whacks were copped. Many impacts were delivered with the gun in profile, and those shots have travelled through, missing most of the parts I want to use. The portion that the carriage sat upon remains largely intact, needing only some cosmetic work to return to ideal condition. Apparently there is still some shell shrapnel inside that area, and I want to salvage it before welding up the damage. Exactly how much of the original trails length I will retain, I cannot say at this point, though my replica will portray a welded trail gun. Accompanying the trails section, is a group of smaller pieces which include another trail portion with a platform securing handle, and the fitting which I understand a pneumatic pump would have sat when being used. A most exciting piece, is shown in the following image. This carriage side piece, though supremely attacked by tin-worm, is precisely what i need to have. It will allow me to form up exact copies of my own. Reversing the jig will ensure left and right sides are precisely alike. Once two new sides are fabricated, I will then remove the portion that holds elevation gear, and weld it onto the new left hand side. I will need to find another bearing housing block for the cradle. Making another of those is out of my abilities. The sight attachment area will ultimately be salvaged too. The above parts are yet to arrive, but they have been paid for and shipping co. has been chosen. It's now a matter of when they arive. That could be several weeks yet. The piece in my NEXT post, will be received considerably sooner.

I'm grateful for every small piece I get. Sometimes a piece is not so small. Right out of the blue came offer to purchase a part which i could scarsely imagine finding. Ever. I missed one of these on ebay 2 to 3 years ago, and never seen another one since. Until now. Another example of MLU member/s to the rescue.
Friday morning I leave for an interstate trip to bring the platform home. Now you understand why some of the brackets and attachments on the blasted trails section are so desirable! If anybody has the ground anchor/spade end of trails set for sale, PLEASE let me know. I'll get a full gun eventually. A lot of that is thanks to you fellow MLU members. PS: I've actually been offered a genuine barrel and breach assembly, but this could be a step too far, I feel.

Almost forgot.
Amongst the parts I've bought, a very handy chunk of 25pr axle. I'll set it at correct height, weld legs on each end, and use it to attach my trails to while welding proceeds. Phillip, The platform will get a bloody good cleaning in coming weeks!

Not the spade cover. I've got one of those here somewhere, I think. I'm after any of the pieces that make up the spade end of trails. Have 3x hand spike pedals and the levers hand spikes lock into. Only need everything else!

I'm back from retrieving my platform. Left home 0430hrs yesterday, and arrived back at 1630hrs today. That's 2400km in 36 hours. I wouldn't recommend it.
On the positive side, I'll post all the highlights tomorrow, after I get some decent sleep.

That was quite a long trip. Well worth it for the part, and opportunity to meet Euan at the world famous racetrack known as Mt Panorama.
My god, Bathurst has SERIOUSLY changed since I visited the track almost 30 years ago. At that time, we had recently purchased a new convertible, and I had intended to drive a lap of the circuit. Were it not for another motorist flashing his headlights as we were exiting the top of the mountain, I would have earned probably the largest speeding ticket of my life, because there was a police radar set up along the straight section where drivers get the greatest speed. I guestimate that we could have been doing in excess of 200km/h by that stage. Yeah, I know. Young and stupid! I travelled the inland route down to Bathurst, but was not pleased with where the GPS sent me. I'm afraid to say New South Wales country roads are just as bad as back home here. Making things worse, the wildlife is always a problem, as can be seen by all the dead kangaroos along the roadside. I decided to return by the coastal highway. There is a stark contradiction between the two routes. The new highway sections still being built, are constructed of thick concrete, so they will outlast tar roads by decades. This is a 1:1 scale replica showing how big the fruit grows in this part of the world. Because I came home via coastal highway, it brought me past a friends place, who had offered me 4x Land Rover wheels. I collected those, plus the last of my finished CMP wheels, which had been left there for me by the chap who fit the tyres for me. Some time this week I hope to get those onto the truck, and remove the old tyres from the Land Rover wheels so I can prepare them for painting.

I would be interested in hearing from anybody here in Australia who has firsthand experience with transporting an entire artillery gun over significant distances. Say for example, 25pr gun from southern Victoria to equivalent distance of maybe south east Queensland. That would mean roughly - 2000km. Is it as horrendously expensive as i imagine it to be?
Just a hypothetical question.

If the wheel bearings are packed, and the tires are in good shape, towing it on it's own wheels behind a regular pickup truck is a dicey proposition. We have decent size pickups here in N. America.....in fact we are mocked for them. But the smallish trucks I see elsewhere would have a hard time handling the non-braked artillery pieces. Add to that there is a bit of a speed limitation to them, since they generally have no suspension. Our roads, at least in this province, will cause the artillery piece to develop a bit of a rhythmic skip. I have worked with rolled over parts from 105s.....the main chassis is usually OK, but it will be the telescope mounts and the shields and brackets that will bear the brunt of the upside down operation.
I have used my own pickup truck to go short 20 mile trips, or 200 mile round trips to the city, but in general, a trailer is the preferred method of movement. Luckily, the 25 pdr at under 4,000 pounds is a relatively light load, especially for the cummins diesel. |

In thinking back to the days when we still had Guy Fawkes night, I can recall some kids (not me, naturally) would put crackers into mailboxes, thus 'blowing them up'. I would be hesitant to tow something as heavy (and unsprung) as a 25pr any real distance beyond my place and town, a trip of 40km, which is about the extent I would dare drag one. Even that distance would be 80km/h and half the time I'd be on sealed backroads, to minimise irritation to drivers intent on breaking Sir Donald Campbells speed record. Bastards!

I read this with some interest and a little trepidation - 80km/h? Max 'cruising speed' according to the manual is 25mph (40kph).
They bounce alot at 40km/h - I would not fancy any axle/ bearing issues with an unbraked - 1 1/2 tonnes at twice this recommended speed. You are right for long trips - put it on something more modern (truck or trailer) but when towing short distances, be aware of the 25pdrs limitations. Also stop and check your bearings regularly on every trip.

Good tyres and bearings and good roads and I have had no problems travelling at 80kph behind the Marmy. With the limber included it obviously slows you down of course. My Wiles Junior Cooker has leaf springs and the sign on the back of it says 25 mph too.

Well it's all academic at this stage, anyway. I do appreciate the contributions, and it will help to reinforce need to slow down when towing my gun. That's assuming we haven't changed to flying vehicles by that time. At least I can vouch for the bearings on my present axle.

Circling back to your Post 316, Tony
If I read your question as being related to a freight shipping issue regarding costs and/or reliability, I can assure you I have had no direct dealings with such in Australia, but can offer some insights into a bit of the operation here in Canada.
For the most part, if you are moving something 'specialized' like a 25-pdr from a Point A to a Point B, both of which are high traffic areas for freight companies, prices are pretty fixed. There is lots of business available and nobody is going to go broke if they say they are not interested. There is lots of work available. That holds pretty true for both the major players and the smaller independent operators. If either of your Point A or Point B are in lower freight traffic areas, you might find a good deal with a smaller independent who may be in a situation of hauling a full load out but not have enough business to bring back in. It's not in their best interests to be moving an empty, or near empty rig anywhere. It's a crap shoot in a way finding a shipper that it will work for, but definitely worth the time to look into. A bit like the car rental business. They will rent you a vehicle for a one way trip, but don't like to because it costs them money to send somebody out to bring the vehicle back to their location. If you are planning a long road trip here by rental, it sometimes pays to see if anyone here has a vehicle needing to be returned to where you are going. It becomes a plus situation for them rather than a negative. And you can usually find another stranded vehicle at the other end, you can use to get home. My inflation riddled two cents. David |
