23 (Southern) Corps
Hi Bill,
Div. sign is of the UK 23 (Southern) Corps, of post war 1950's Territorial Army origin. The sign is an adaption of the sign of the zodiac being given a fish tail. 'TWENTY -THREE SOUTH' is a nautical term for the approximate latitude of the Tropic of Capricorn. Ian |

23 Corps
Thanks Ian. Do you know of a good reference for all eras of British formation / shoulder title patches? I have the standard refs, eg Cole, Davis and Bouchery, and they are focused on the WWII issues. British Army Cloth Insignia 1940 to Present is not complete. Or is there a web site? I have done several searches and haven't come across anything like the Canuck site for the British army. Suggestions anyone?

Re: British Formation Patches
Bill;
I believe that M.A. Bellis has a book out covering this, but from 1945-1970 or 75?. I'll confirm this and if so, post full name of book. Chhers

Re: British Formation Patches
Bill;
The name of the Bellis' book is : THE BRITISH ARMY OVERSEAS 1945-1970, it covers: the British Army in - Palestine, Canal Zone, Suez Crisis, Malaya, Korea, Kenya, Aden, Cyprus, Borneo and the Gulf States, contains 100 insignia. This may not be what your looking for, but hope this helps. Cheers

Source of Information
Bill,
I was for many years a member of the Military Heraldry Society and one of the references I use is an old publication called 'Badges on Battledress' originally published in the fifty's by the then President of the Society Lieut, Col. Howard N. Cole by Gale and Polden. I am still looking for a very limited number of elusive signs, most being Royal Artillery battery's from the post war T. A. Ian |
