Default Ford pulling Chev

Obviously a blatant forgery, or a juxtaposed backwards print.

Default It's real

You can tell... the bloke in the close up picture is so disappointed about the Chev getting bogged he's about to moon it - just the cameraman was a bit quick with the shutter.

Default Not real

My first instinct was to go with Alex's explanation, then I thought, "No, Silly, you can't push by using a chain"... (reckon I'd better ease up on the tea maybe). It's obvious, of course - the Chev is pulling the stuck Ford carrier backwards off the road into the ditch, to clear the way for the following convoy of Chevs to get up to the Front. Afterwards, said Chev will disengage, climb out of the ditch, move to the front of the Ford carrier, and proceed to drag it wherever it has to go, since that's the only way it's going to get there.

Really quite simple when you think about it.

Default In the background with Rommel

I've attempted to ID the vehicle in the background to no avail. The rims almost look CMP, although I'm not sure.. Perhaps it's a captured vehicle that has had a command box built on the back? This vehicle could be German, Italian, or British or perhaps even something else. It's an interesting picture, Rommel is awarding a medal to his Italian compatriots...perhaps these Italian officers can be found in the World's Thinnest Book? Any ideas as to what type of truck this is?

You'd be pretty much on the money there - the codes denote 253 squadron RAF.

Here's a potted history:

Quote:
On 30 October 1939, No 253 Squadron reformed at Manston and was originally intended as a shipping protection unit with Blenheims. None were delivered, however, and the squadron began to receive Hurricanes in February 1940, becoming operational on 3 April. In May 1940 one flight was sent to France to reinforce the hard-pressed Hurricane squadrons while the second flight flew daily to French airfields from 17 to 23 May. After re-equipping in Lincolnshire, No 253 took part in the Battle of Britain from the end of August and remained in southern England until January 1941. In February the squadron moved to the Orkneys for air defence duties, returning to England in September for convoy patrols off the East Coast. After taking part in the Dieppe raid, No.253 became non-operational in preparation for the invasion of North Africa and arrived in Algeria a few days after the landings. It provided air cover for the Army and its supply lines during the Tunisian campaign and its aftermath, moving to Italy in October 1943. In February 1944, the squadron arrived in Corsica to undertake escort and anti-shipping missions, returning to Italy in April for similar duties over Yugoslvia. In April 1945, it moved to an airfield captured by Yugoslav partisans near Zadar for the last days of the war. After a period in northern Italy and Austria the squadron acquired a flight of Spitfire XIs from No.225 Squadron and disbanded on 16 May 1947.

Bob the new system will allow multiple photos as long as they are 700 wide and under 244mb each. When the first has finished uploading just hit browse again and add the next photo etc.

Alex, thanks for finding these pictures!

It looks like one of many 3-tonners converted with a caravan body for use as a mobile office of some sorts. Most likely attached to a HQ unit.

Interestingly, the 3rd picture shows a Stuart VI Recce!

Hi Hanno;

In answer to a question by Alex van de Wetering, in the 'Defrocked Priest in South Alberta Regt' thread in the Armour Forum, located here: http://www.mapleleafup.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4342,
I had replied that the vehicles in the photos from the 'Grote markt', Bergen op Zoom, belonged to those of RHQ and Recce Troop, of the 29th Canadian Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The South Alberta Regiment), C.A.C., of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division.

Cheers

Yes Mark,

certainly a noteworthy day, today. Any idea where the picture was taken? My guess would be Bernieres-sur-Mer. Anyone know for sure? I will be in Normandy next week.

Hi Alex;

Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer (NAN RED Beach - The North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment & "C" Sqn, 10 CAR (FGH)). Two of the three DD tanks of "C" Sqn, 10 CAR (FGH) that were lost to enemy fire on the beach can be seen in the photo along with AVREs of 80th Assault Squadron, R.E., along with other various vehicles.

Cheers

You might have hit the nail on the head Noel with the tar boiler. Advance parties of the Royal Engineer's five Airfield Construction Groups landed at the British and Canadian beaches on D Day with the bulk of their plant arriving D+ 2 or 3. Getting airstrips quickly operational was a huge concern of SHAEF in order to provide close air cover over the invasion beaches. 16 Airfield Construction Group had the first Emergency Landing Strip operational June 7th. PBS (Prefabricated Bituminous Surfaces) was commonly used for runway surfaces with repairs quickly made with a mop, a bucket of molten tar, and some burlap or Hessian.

CHIMO! Derek.

Only just background, this former Trucks, Wireless Signals (Aust).

Interesting to note that with Australian disposals in the 50s the Authorities had first dibs on ex-military vehicles.
