Armoured CGT?
Now, recently these two pictures emerged labelled as "Caplad" too.
But clearly this does not have the rear-engined layout of the Caplad - so what is it? I have seen the picture on the left before but cannot recall details... L4594251 may have been part of the range of WD census numbers H4593648 - H 4594497; SM 2018; Chevrolet; Tractor 4x4 Field Artillery. I cannot find another reference in the Chillwell list.

L4594251 does seem to have a lot of FAT design features. I suspect it is simply an attempt at a lightly armoured FAT. I think it is a very odd shape for any other role.

David,
If it was intended as a gun tractor, wouldn't it have been an "H" prefix, rather than changed to an 'L'? I agree it looks to have many gun tractor features, but I'm wondering why change the prefix to a truck. Mike |

Perhaps during Invasion Planning, the potential need was seen for an armoured 4x4 Truck Tractor for Cargo Trailers and/or Tank Recovery, but the idea never got past the one off prototype/concept vehicle, and this was it?

It is not unusual to see the wrong prefix letter used for the census number in the Chilwell list. regards, Richard

Converted CGT to APC
I have seen this vehicle referred to as a CGT that has been converted to an APC which might explain the L prefix letter.

Perhaps an armoured Observation Post Vehicle but the purpose of that box on the back would probably identify its use.

The box on the rear might be as simple as providing a bit of storage (POL (flammable) cans, tire chains, whatever) outside the crew compartment, using the existing frame length without being nearly as heavy as a full height/width compartment.
