MK-II* Carrier trivia question
Many, if not all factory original engine cover ventilation screens from the UC NO2 MKII* have a small framed rectangular shape opening.
A similar opening is not observed in the MK-I* or UC-2 series carriers. Trivia question: What is the opening for? |

Wrap your pasties in foil and leave them on the grate until lunch time?
But seriously, is it not for exhaust air from the cooling system; in from the front and out through the top. Without this the fan would have nowhere to vent the hot air from the radiator and the cooling system would not function efficiently. All tracked AFVs that I can think of have a similar system. When I worked with Challenger 2 Recovery Vehicles the hot air outlets were a very popular place to dry off after recovering things from water!

Tom you missed the point! it's not the actual grill that is in question. It's the formed rectangular hole within the grill. Ron

If you look down to the hull floor through the opening I believe you will see a hull drain fitting. If I remember correctly, on my (now someone else's) carrier, this is where the shaft came through to open and close the drain.

Not so Perry! The 'T' handle drain rod has its own location. Ron

It appears my memory is not that good after all!
I now see the drain shaft in the first post. |

Grate thoughts ...
. . a few are kinda cheesy though.
Two framed openings within the engine ventilation screen of the MK-II. The round hole with brass grommet frame allows the rear hull drain seal assembly opening/closing rod to pass through. The MK-II* rear hull drain is unlike that found on the MK-I* series of three models of carriers. Then there is that pesky rectangular shaped opening. |

Was it to let one fit a wrench in on the nut for the bolt in line with the cutout?

I can't see anything in easy reach of a spanner! The only things that line up under that aperture are, the clutch rod pivot and the bush that the gear change rod runs through. If dripping oil onto those components were the case, then it could easily be done through the diamond mesh without the need of the rectangular hole.......I dunno!?? Ron

Is it for access to the screw type fuel change over valve?
In A MkIIIw the screen has a hinged section which is held shut with a spring and a hooked catch like is found on early race car bonnets (hoods) and 3 inch mortars.

Ron Pier... it kept me awake, on and off over some seven years.
Was it a left-over from an early stowage design? Did a portion of the BREN tripod some how touch that area? If the PIAT or Boys was mounted on the engine deck, did a portion of either somehow need clearance? What about the change from the smaller engine ventilation screen of the MK-I* and UC-2 made of copper wire? The screens are not interchangeable between the MK-I* and the MK-II*, could that be a clue? |

Is it anything to do with the oil filter? Mine hasn't got one, so I can't check it.
Otherwise I haven't got a clue! Ron |

Oil filter sits on the drivers side roughly mid engine bay.

I know there was a canvas winter cover that went over that grill for cold weather operations . Does it have something to do with that ?

Donald Rumsfeld once said: "as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns; the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”
I think that applies to this thread. Some people Know. Some people Don't Know. And lots of people Know they Don't Know, and others Don't Know they Don't Know. I sorta think I Know where I fit in? Or do I? I Dunno!

The word is ‘ransom’.
It may be a relief for some when the details are revealed. Last edited by Michael R.; 27-02-20 at 05:40. |
