Strange portable fuel tank to identify.
I received an email with these photos this morning and I cannot identify this fuel tank, so over to you experts. Obviously of Australian manufacture in 1944 although it has both 1943 and 1944 dates shown.
Note the handles for carrying it. thanks Rick.

C264 was an ammo can for 6 rounds of ammo for the 6 pdr gun. It looks like someone cut the end off a second can to make a fuel tank out of it. I doubt it would have been the military....more likely a farmer modification.

Thanks Rob, That would explain the two different dates. Well done that man!
Regards Rick.

fuel tanks
Hi Ric,
I have had a few of these converted ammo tins made into fuel tanks. mine also had different dated ends. Our jeep had one in place of the back seat as a long range tank.

The original lids were fully sealable and water proof with a central rotating clamp system and o-ring, same as the 40mm ammo boxes issued to RAN ships (which were also galvanised). They were stackable on the ends. Now I'm told they could be used for long-term storage of items in an O2-less environment by lighting a candle stub inside, then sealing the lid on. The candle burned out when the O2 within the container was used up.
