Indian pattern "Burma Buggy" HUP
I have just about completed a 1942 Burma Buggy on a Cab 13 Chev HUP chassis, the engine is a 261 Chev straight six. The 216 was scrap metal only & the 235's were non-existant when I started on this (about 4 years ago) but was lucky enough to find a 216 that didn't need too much work & these fit the Chevies using the bell housing, fly wheel & started off the 216. Pix will follow hopefully in the next month or so.

Re-engined CMPs
Sorry for typing error on my previous report. The engine in the Burma Buggy is a 261 not a 216 but thr data re using the bell housing, fly wheel & starter off the 216 is correct.

It looks like it is based on the C8A or C8AX.
I haven't seen paper reference to the type before, but that doesn't mean much because I keep being surprised at the things that were oficially built on CMP chassis. Recently I have found official reference to KL welders on Chev chassis where before I had thught they were all on Fords to have common spares for the truck engine and welder engine. The same source makes reference to a snowblower on CMP chassis as opposed to MCP Ford-MH. Some of our contributors in the Winnipeg area have probably seen the truck and may know its history. |

That's William Spence's C8AX from Winnipeg. He's a forum member but I haven't seen any postings from him in a long time. He had a cut down HUP and that's a repro rear body he came up with. It kind of looks like he copied one of those Indian pattern bodies. Check out this thread.

Thank you, I knew that his eBay ID should tell me something and my brain didn't make the connection.

Bill also listed his GPW at a very favorable price on ebay at the same time. It almost had Derk Derin ready to abandon his jeep project and buy Bill's. But a sharp ebay buyer has removed that option for Derk, and it is now listed as sold.

It's got a 261 Pontiac in it too per this thread
It looks like he did a good job on the repro body too.

Burma Buggy
When I moved from my house in the country 5 years ago south of Winnipeg and moved back home to West st. Paul North of the city,I cleared out alot of my vehicle collection and my HUP was one of the projects I let go of and Bill bought it from me.He worked many years to get it in the shape it is in now.I am sure Bill would be glad to talk to anybody that is interested in the truck and answer any questions you may have. His jeep sure was tempting but I have one now in my garage and in the end when it's restored,I can say I did the work myself and brought another one back to life.I see it was sold and sent Rob an email to see if he bought it? There is a restored Norton 16H motorcycle in Tenessee right now on Ebay motors I am drooling over but is too far away to pick up and I have a yard full of projects right now that need money to complete.Am I the only collector out there that gets sidetracked from his projects to chase after something he doesn't have yet or are there others out there with the same problem as me?
Regards,Derk.

Find attached a picture of Bill Spence's Indian HUP. Located in St. Catharines, Ontario now. It is being repainted at the moment and the plan is to renew the canvas over the winter.

Burma Buggy back on the market
Brian spotting Bill Spence's "Burma Buggy" back on the market prompted me to merge some of the postings into a separate thread.
It turns out Bill wanted to build a C8AX first, then decided to build a replica of an Indian Pattern HUP. I think he did a fine job, especially if you realise he had very little documentation to work from. William "Bill" Spencer has since passed away, as did the second owner of this peculiar C8A. Here's hoping this truck finds a new good home. Quote:
