Default Max tyre width on 16" blitz rims

Just wondering what the widest tyre you can fit onto the original 16" two piece blitz/CMP rims is? Can you get 12.5" wides on?

Harry,

You can get just about anything on the rims if you are only operating at low speed off road. Once you start on the road or on the beach or anywhere with low pressures you run the risk of rolling them off the 6 1/2 inch rims.

Modern radial tyres require wide base rims whereas old style tyres required much narrower rims for the same sidewall width. According to the Tyre and Rim Association handbook (the legal standard manual for all Australian states) a 305 width modern tyre has a minimum 8 inch rim up to 9 1/2 while a 315 width has 8 1/2 up to 10 inch rim requirement.

If you want to stay legal you will not find a modern radial tyre as wide, let alone wider, than the original 9.00x16 that can use the blitz rims. I think best you can do is 8.25x16 equivilent which is narrower than what you started with.

But that means a C30 or F30 in original trim would be illegal? Or were the rims for 10.50x16 bigger? Ideally I want to put 10.50x16s on but finding them for an affordable price doesn't seem like it'll ever happen!

Harry,

There are two possibilites.

The rims on the bigger blitz were wider but more likely the 10.50x16 were legal on the standard rim. As I said above, the old type tyres were MUCH narrower across the bead and could take narrower rims legally. If you can find 10.50x16 (the only place I know of is Wallace Wade in USA- $311 each) you would be OK but if you are putting modern tyres on you are outside the box.

so the 30cwts had a different 16" rim to the 15cwts? Also how could a 10.50x16 be legal but a metric tyre 10.5" wide not be? Man getting tyres for a blitz has to be the hardest job of all
