This photo speaks for itself. I've long since forgotten the loc, but Lt. Dennis Whitaker (driving), as Capt. Whitaker, was the highest ranking officer of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry to emerge unscathed from the debacle at Dieppe, and went on to command the Regiment. Later in life and in conjunction with his wife, Shelagh, 'Denny' wrote a series of very thought-provoking books on the war including
Tug of War and
Rhineland. He died a few years ago as Brigadier Dennis Whitaker, DSO & Bar, and I attended his funeral in Oakville, Ontario.
