Saturday didn't rain as forecast, so Bob and I spent time replacing the chimney collar on the barn to keep out rain, snow and critters. The old one had been destroyed during the winter's snows. Next project was finishing off the fenders on the recovery trailer. They are now painted and mounted, removable to load wider vehicles (or flat tired CMPs). The licence plate was also relocated to a frame mounted bracket to ease fender removal. The full refurbishment of the trailer is on hold (sandblast, paint OD, rewire). After Lunch Clive arrived to clean the pine needles out of his Jeep and erect a shelter for the Jeep. Ground was levelled and the Princess Auto (made in China with cryptic instructions) shelter was erected. This one is wider but not as tall as the others, better suited for Jeeps than CMPs. They also made the roof and sides as one tarp and provided bars along the sides near ground level.
A few more minor items and it was declared beer time. No photos because Bob was the official photographer and I'v now sent him on a recce for more rusty old trucks. I'd prefer them not to be rusty but that doesn't seem to happen here. Actually, Bob is performing family duties but can anyone imagine him not looking for CMPs if the opportunity presents? |

.... before we head off to CC 7
Two photos of where Clive's Jeep and trailer now resides..... The shelters are from Princess.... 10x20 but not really high enough for a C 15a CMP....... but very appropriate for a Jeep..... Clive's original trailer is acrually stored behind the Jeep sideways. Not having yet installed some wooden beam that will allow to lag bolt the shelter to the ground CLive was cautioned to tie down the canvass shelter to the Jeep itself....... NOTE... must remind Clive to untie the rope before driving the Jeep out of the shelter.... It keeps it nice and dry..... BooBee

Clive's shelter is actually 12Wx8Hx20L, the 10x10x20 ones that are covering my C15A and 2K1 wireless body (body is not mounted on the truck, it wouldn't come close to fitting heightwise) will be on sale at Princess for $200 (actually $199.99 if the penny matters anymore) June 24 to July 13. A couple of years ago when I bought mine, they ran out in about 2 days.

Grant, Thanks for posting the "Hammond News". Aside from watching the grass grow and taking notes on Clive's jeep knitting technique, was there any real CMP progress? I know that you and Bob were scheduled to go to CC and look forward to some reports later today - I will be peeking in and out from the lounge in Beijing (AKA Peking for the pun challenged). Got to say, the cabin crew from Thai Airway are polite, friendly, and the girls are lovely. I think Air Canada should hire some of them - think of the weight savings...
I will be back in Canada a little too late for CC, so any photos would be appreciated!

Yesterday morning we had a guest at the barn, GuyVapeur dropped in with some of his latest garage sale / flea market finds. The attached photos show one of the boxes he brought for us to puzzle over. The box is 12 x 5-5/8 x 7-3/8 inches with a stamped topbut otherwise folded construction. All joints are riveted. There is a row of relief holes in the main part of the case along the hinge line to receive the projecting ends of the rivets that secure the piano hinge. the handle is 1 inch webbing, attached by rivets. Although it looks crude at first glance, it makes sense to have the folded over ends exposed and the smooth (as opposed to split/rough) end of the rivets to the bottom. Doing it this way makes a smoother, more comfotable handle for carrying the box. There was no sign that there had been dividers or fitted blocks inside the case to hold a specific object. The general standard of workmanship on the case is quite good. (not the common "unskilled workers for the war effort" often seen)
None of us know the purpose of the box, but we are hoping others may have suggestions. |

Hi Grant,
Nice find. I have a box like that although the height measures 7 7/8". Stamped on the front, below the latch, in 5/8" letters is: CHEST, AMMUNITION CAL 50, M17 D39091 Cheers, Brian |

The box remains the property of Guy, he seems to have a talent for spotting "green objects of interest". The dimensions I gave were more or less interior dimensions for the main part of the box, adding for the depth of the lid would make your box and Guy's almost identical in size. This box didn't seem to have evidence of stamping or embossing, or seem to have enough paint to hide all traces of it. It could easily be for the same use or be a similar box for another purpose. Thank you for the clue.
