Customs is about as consistant as my ex-wifes cooking. And they do that intentionally. You got through smooth, but every so many entries gets checked a little further. So while you will get through 9 times out of 10, once you get refused, it will be much harder to ever get them through after that. I believe an Ontario dealer found that out once with several hundred M151 tires he was trying to bring up from the US.

I know when I went to safety my M38A1 a couple years ago the sharp eyed mechanic caught that the tires did not show the DOT markings. I had to trade around with some of my trailers which did have the marks on them.

I am after these for my Bofors, which is kind of an implement. It will spend very few miles on the road. I would prefer the old chevron tread, but would be happy with a road tread, as long as the tires are fresh. I would hate to blow a tire in the middle of a parade.

All:
I called Wallace Wade this am and spoke with Chris. I asked him if he could get me a picture of the tread design of the tire mold that Specialty Tire that they (or Wallace) purchased from the factory in Canada. I also asked if he could find out if Specialty would make a run of a lesser number of tires, 50 instead of the 100 Wallace originally told me.

Chris said he'd call me back on the tread design but that Wallace would be the one to answer my question on the reduced quantity. Wallace is out of town and won't be back until next Tuesday. Will let you all know what I find out from Chris when I hear back from him.

Regards,
Jim

All:
Checked with the tire company in Australia and was advised that there is no volume discount on the shipping cost. It remains at $120 USD per tire.

Regards,
Jim

PS No return call from Chris at Wallace Wade on the tread design; will follow up on Friday if I don't hear anything tomorrow.

Default Cost of certification.....

Hi Rob

In my previous conversation with Wallace, a real nice guy if you can get a hold of him, the costs associated with the delays to obtain DOT certification are probably driving the cost way high...... that was the major cause of the delays on the 10:50x16....... I was told the first small batch for destruction testing and certification did not go well so more had to be run...... he is also at the mercy of the producer who will fit these short runs when his prduction permits.... the retooling for a few tires gets to be expensive......

....but I must say the tires we got look good and have all the necessary DOT stamping and numbers on them........

Too bad more interest could not be stirred up for a 100 tires..... I believe the same problem is happening to the tentative production of 18 inch Gamma Goat tires that he proposes to produce.

Only time will tell.

So are these 10.50 X 16 tires now a stocked item by him, or was it a one time run? They certainly are a great looking tire.

Does anyone know if he has the molds for the 9X16 chevron tires? Now that should be a hot seller up here in Canada.

Hi Rob

My recollection from conversation with Wallace was that the intitial run of a few hundred tires went by so fast that he requested an additional batch. It implies that most of the original batch he had ordered we sold and shipped directly from the manufacturer in Indiana Pa to buyers. The second run is probably not yet exhausted but is the real profit run for him now that certification cost and start up as now been covered.

The big question is if the 2nd run gets exhausted, will he still have enough demand to run a 3rd run. The market place for such tires is finite. I for one do not expect to ever wear out these new tires even if I drove with the brakes on......

I am not sure of what other molds he may have acquired ....but competing with the regular bar thread 9:00x16, new and used and other assorted Mudder and Michelin block thread tires ...it may not be a financially feasible project.

It is ironic that Wallace from Texas acquired the molds from a Toronto source and has the tires made in Pennsylvania to be exported back to Canada.

At least we got them!!!!

As for the elusive 9:00 x 13.... the only way the price might.... and I say might .....drop..... is if the hobbiest got together..... money upfront in trust... ordered a special run and bought out the total run from Wallace.......
His risk at that point is nil and the total cost would only reflect tooling, use of the molds and certification...... mark up would be minimal. Organizing such a venture requires commitment and commitment from everyone concerned. I don't think the hobby is there yet!!!!

Jim,

I have followed this thread with interest over the past few weeks. Having recently purchased a Chev C8, I also followed numurous links for new tyres. LWD parts still have Alliance tyres in stock and given the hard-to-get nature of the 9.00x13 tyres I thought it was a good idea to include the tyres in the purchase, because you can never be sure when others are available...and so I did. So, for me personally joining the list for having 100 tyres made, is too late. And I just haven't got the cash to buy another 4 tyres.

I agree with Rob Love that placing an ad, maybe on Milweb, might get you the numbers needed to have 100 tyres produced. You think there ought to be enough people with Canadian or British 8 cwts and Bofors to get to a 100tyres order. Finding a clever way to get a number of the tyres to Europe, might get people over here interested.

Tony Smith also mentioned "Victor tyres" once in the other 9.00x13 thread. Any idea if those are still available?

Alex
