UC shifting issue

41 UC MKI
original motor and trans
i have 1-4 (with a little binding, not bad)
on R. it will not engage, it spins the gears and will not engage for more than 1 sec then grinding. i have swaped transmission tops with the same problem.

could it be the clutch?
or bad gear?
or misalined?
or something else?

Have your tried double clutching at all. Somtimes the shifter will not engage the gear all the way unless the clutch is double clutched.

My other thought is that the shifter may be binding on somthing that woudl not allow it to go all the way in its slot. Does it go fully to the front edge?

tried dbl clutching, nothing

shifter is free and goes all the way to the metal, infact it feels like it needs to go furthur. all the other gears are in the normal area.

Dave, when you swapped the trans tops, did you look at the condition of the gears inside? Sometimes the beveled edges of the gears get rounded off from too much "Grinding" and wont engage properly. Reverse involves meshing 3 gears together, so any wear will accentuate the problem.

Jeez, before you go and pull the trans, I'd check a few things first. Look at those gear edges first. Make sure that they ARE worn and are the culprit.
Check the shifter linkages for wear or poor adjustment. Check the selector forks in the trans tower aren't worn.

Lots to inspect well before you go to the hassle of pulling the box!

yup have checked everything, and yes the gears are worn.
besides it only takes about 2 hrs to pull the trans

Did you recently change the position of the shifter mounts in the front of the carroier? or the plate that the shifter moves in?

I'd remove the plate first and see what a difference that makes.

Bent shifting forks will cause that problem and is common on the Ford transmission.,..

changed the top with a known good shift tower
same problem

i think its the gears
cant change the trans today (storm) will let all know if that is the fix.

ok changed the trans with a known working one, working shift tower, still will not go in R and sometimes binds.

could it be that the clutch is not engaging enugh? im thinking the clutch rod may need adjusting.

When you changed out the shift tower did you change out the entier unit or just the top. If just the top you may want to change out the entier thing as it could be bent lower down.

I would think that if the clutch works fine for the other gears then your clutch pedal/linkage is not the problem.

i took it off my MKII carrier and swapped it. the KMII shifts fine.

Dave,

The problem is the same as what I had. Your shift linkage is bent. Either the rod that goes back to the transmission or its the upside down that goes directly on top of the shift tower. Believe me, it only has to be bent out of shape by a very small amount to throw off the shifting.

Take a moment and removethe U shaped piece it from the carrier, and shift the gears directly on the shift tower by hand with someone behind the wheel with the clutch in. I think you will find it works.

I really don't suspect its an internal problem.

ah ha.... we were all wrong. me too

are you smarter than a 5th grade carrier?

i didnt secure the 2 rear engine hold down rods. the eng moved forward about 4/5 of a cm so the gear shifter never was able to move the gears properly. didnt see it till i took a break got dressed in my good cloths to take the wife to dinner. now i need some new good cloths. for reason these are covered in gear oil now. but it moves

All the above "Cures" and the actual eventual fix deals with clearance and alignment...pretty hard to fix on line but good leads to check out..It all boils down ,as allways to "Boots on the ground"..You da man..
