Not just Herr Meyer's book, Derek. It is recorded in Allied publications that word about the German summary executions got around within a couple of days even to the lowest ranks in the two Canadian divisions ashore, and the unofficial policy became 'take no prisoners amongst the SS'. The latter had habits such as hiding in spider holes, popping up to shoot one of our lads, then throwing their hands up in surrender. As you can imagine, that didn't go down too well with our lads on the ground...
