Great article, thanks Mike. One sentence struck me as particularly relevant:

"Relationships with the Armed services were not always cordial and there were some heated exchanges between them, mostly over delays, unfulfilled promises and too much research at a time when the services needed working equipment."

That sentence could be applied equally to a number of research-design-manufacture-supply matters including the various Australian designed AFVs, most of which ended up being terminated after limited production.
