That's an interesting variation on the clamshell tire retainer shown on the Ford GS without tarp. Do you have any idea whether that's a production variant or a replacement fabricated locally. In any case, it looks like it would be much simper to replicate than the "more normal" clamshell.

Grant, that is a production variant of the fixed part of the carrier.

The Chevrolet carrier is mounted to open to the left, the Ford one is mounted to open to the right. One of the many variations between Ford and Chev CMP which are otherwise identical

There goes that idea... I didn't see a pivot or the little ramp section but was being (excessively) optimistic that a simple solution was presenting itself.
