Default Loyd

Hi Adrian, There is a box for one and a aerial mount and in the box there is a shelve with clamps which tighten up with wing nuts

Might be a postwar addition, though if being used as an artillery (4.2" mortar or anti-tank gun) tractor a wireless set would have been useful. If fitted it's likely to have been a WS38 or WS18 I would think.

Chris.

From what I've managed to find over the years all Loyd TTs came from the factory with a location for a WS22 set up on the front left track guard, you will find the stowage rack for a pair of batteries and odd shaped holes in the left hand side for the battery cables. There is also the base plate for the Ariel mount, hanging off the top of the upper hull. The wartime stowage diagrams have a note that says for TT's setup for radio the lower ammunition rack longitudinal bars must be cut away for the radio to fit.

Doing some research with Pete Mason and his 4.2" mortar collection last year the evidence strongly suggests that the WS22 set and indeed any WS fitment (Loyds only ever had WS22) was only on 4.2" Mortar carrier Loyds and even then, only in the nominated 'command' vehicle.

On a Loyd TT pulling a 6 Pdr there would not in all probability have been a radio installed, the battery rack being nominated as simply a ration storage box on the 6 Pdr TT stowage diagrams.

PS. When I say left, this is from the drivers perspective, looking forward.
PPS. Saying that a location was 'setup' for a WS22 is probably giving the Loyd more credit than it deserves, 'nominated' would probably be more appropriate as there are no fittings for a mount so I guess the unit would just bolt in the WS22 vehicle mount in the nominated command vehicle. Does anyone have a photo of WS22 vehicle mount they could post?

I've never seen a wartime photo of a loyd TT with 6 pdr with a radio aerial. The TT 6 pdr wartime storage diagrams which detail both the loyd towing the gun and the one just with extra ammo have no radio fitted.

Radios are nice, fit one.
