The ladies' headgear would appear to be somewhat unusual. Without seeming to be culturally insensitive, what is it?

They are traditional Dutch headdress called oorijzer or ear-irons, which varied in material and size per town or region. The were adorned by a lace cap.

Back in those days women would not go outside except when fully dressed up in traditional clothes.
