Alex, I wonder if those are stowage tubes on the booms for some sort of extra kit?

I'm pretty much 100% that they were solid wood logs/rollers. Unique to Canadian contracts, also seen on CMP wreckers. I do need to confirm documentation on this and to find the correct nomenclature.

As Grant states, it will be logs stowed on the boom. They are for things like running the winch cable over if the cable would otherwise be cutting into rock or earth. The logs will take the wear rather than the wire rope. The log can also be used for dunnage under the front bumper of a vehicle casualty when suspend towing. Again, the wood protects both the bumper of the towed vehicle and the cables of the wrecker. The M62 wrecker I am working on at the museum right now has a very large & thick plank as well as a log stowed on the boom. The trucks didn't come with them, but it was common to add them to the vehicle. |
