This is more than an ammunition or fuse box.

Seriously heavy handle, heavy wood wall construction, inlaid catch. It appears to be for a sight or testing instrument (the "tested" stencil would reinforce this theory.

Default box

Could be for housing some kind of delicate instrument . Such as a optical sight or a survey instrument . The turn latch lock is pretty much the same as the seat lid latches on my 1950 Land Rover !

Default Here is another one to ID please

I was given two of these boxes but haven't found any markings yet.

They are wooden with a canvas top and felt seals to the edges which must keep dust out, and felt liners to the shaped formers for whatever they carried.

There is a hasp and staple with the same style of twist lock as on Kevin's one.

I am guessing artillery, and most likely British.

Any ideas please?

Rob

Default I forgot to add...

The leather strap over the lid is fixed to the sides of the box, and it is not a convenient carry strap. Maybe it fastened something else on the lid?

I don't see any sign of clips or brackets for mounting it either.
