All DND plates are in a way hand-made. They come as blanks with only the word Canada on them. The numbers and little leafs are applied by either the base supply major equipment section, or (officially not supposed to happen anymore) the transport section. There were early plates in which the maple leafs were embossed on the plate, and as well early plates had DND embossed instead of Canada, although these were supposed to be later modified with a CANADA plate rivetted over the DND. I say that the units "officially" are not supposed to be making plates themselves, because if a plate is lost or stolen, then the vehicle is supposed to be assigned a new CFR and the old one becomes redundant. However, in reality, a new plate is usually made up and thats the end of it. |

It is now a few days since another military vehicle roller coaster started to unfurl around me.
It was one evening last week after exchanging PMs with Grant Hopkins in BC who owns a KLR ex USMC about the KLR I had bought a year ago in an evening of enthusiasm and blind desire and a massive lack of caution. I bought a green bike that was a civvy bike that had been added to with every known issue part. It was a replica or fake depending on which way you presented it. I said to Grant in my PM that I thought it unlikely that I would ever find a complete genuine ex CF machine. Well, the passage of half an hour proved me wrong when I found one Kijiji in Alberta a listing for one such machine. You could have knocked me over with a feather, I was dumbstruck. I sent an email to the seller and within a few hours we were talking by phone and had struck a deal to purchase. It as is often the case under trying circumstances that Matthew Reid is selling this machine and I recognise that his misfortune is my gain and that I am buying a machine that has been someones pride and joy. This has become so very clear in all the attention to detail that he has lavished into researching everything about the machine. The wealth of knowledge that he has acquired and the lengths he as gone to is brilliant. Matthew bought the bike from CADC directly and has not repainted the machine so all the markings are without question genuine. Can anyone comment on the call sign on the fuel tank? is it 915 or 91S? I am going to start posting some pictures here and I have a few more to post tonight. Once again, my deepest thanks to Matthew who is an absolute gent to deal with. I am now working on the shipping.

Thanks for the comments, I am very ahppy after letting myself get burned last year on the wanna be KLR.
Yes very complete and the former owner has sent loads of information with it and there are spares included as well. I emailed with a friend who is former PPCLI and a generally knowledgeable bloke and he explained this:- "Callsign 91 is applied to different entities depending on the level (Formation/HQ/Manoeuvre Unit/Sub-unit etc.) In the context of a unit in this case 1st, 2nd or 3rd Bn PPCLI, C/S 91 would be applied to the Signals Platoon. 91 Signals Officer, 91 A, B are for Remote Rebroadcasting Sites/Dets for example. 91S was Signals Stores. See below, it changes over time so the date the kit was in use will change the context. For example 91R used to be Signals Repair, it has morphed into sub callsigns for each LCIS tech in that section. If we are talking the 90s it is safe to say it was a Sigs platoon rover/liaison/delivery platform. CO 9 COs LUVW 9A Sig O 91 TSM/FC 91A Crypto DA/FC 91B Helpdesk 91C Lineman 91L Lineman 91L1 LCIS Tech 91R LCIS Tech 91R1 LCIS Tech 91R2 Sig Stores 91S If anyone can shed any more light I am interested to know more
