Citroen Saxo :-) Cheap as proverbial chips online ! For the remainder of the system I used stainless dairy pipe and some nifty Tig welding.

I have done a number of exhaust systems on carriers in the last couple years, and while mine are not 100% as original, they are off the shelf and quiet.
I gat a pair of 1.5" pipes about 6 feet long with 90° bends on the ends. I have the muffler shop match up as closely as possible a pair of mufflers to the original example that I have. I get a pair of tailpipes bent up as per original. Loosely clamp the mufflers in place, and shorten and adjust the 6' pipes to match up with the mufflers. Usuallly the mufflers they find me have larger openings than the 1-1/2 pipes the carrier uses. By using a piece of 2" pipe as an adapter, the mig will close off the rest.. For the pipes from the manifolds to the floor, I clean and clamp the used flanges to the manifolds, and through trial and error get a pair of 1-1/2 pipes with the appropriate bend to fit to the flanges. I tack them in place while still on the engine, then remove them and weld them on the bench. Note they will be fairly loose into the flanges on the floor. The originals have a bit of a ball on the bottom to allow flexing. This can be replicated with heat and a ball peen. End of the day, the exhaust my not pass muster for a 100% original inspection, but it will function nicely and is quiet. A carrier engine (or any Ford flathead for that matter) should whisper. Total outlay should be around $250 (Cdn) for the complete system. |

Rob, great information!
I see that the European folks have a good source with the Citreon muffler, but does anyone on this side have a shop to call into to buy a suitable muffler here? Several kind folks have sent me measurements. Is it as simple as taking the measurements to the local Midas and just asking for a match, brand regardless? Thanks! Jim |

Problem with just measurements is that the two mufflers are indexed differently wrt their inlet and outlet positions. As well, you want to make sure the muffler you buy fits nicely in the clamps. I send a set of the clamps down along with my sample muffler.
If you do end up with two mufflers indexed the same, it is not the end of the world. Worry more about the outlets. The inlets can be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the long shaft. I'll be doing another exhaust system in the next month or so. If you are stil looking at that point I'll get either part numbers for the mufflers or find what vehicle they are applicable to. I do recall that back in the 90s, it was K-car mufflers I was using, but I suspect those will no longer be in production. I doubt there are many (if any) of those cars left. |

I went with a Walker muffler 17864 from NAPA as it was the best I could find that was close to the original one and had a length of 17" in the body and 1 1/2 inlet and outlet. I made the system I believe like the original setup. I also used J bends ( Dynomax 42320 ) for the tail pipe and the bends from the strait pipe to the mufflers as they are a Mandrel bent.
