Looking at the 1940-1942 parts list, it indeed seems the oil filter was not standard on the earlier trucks.
The engine drawing does not show one: image.jpg But at the back of the parts list there is a section, including from which serial numbers onwards - differentiating between British and Canadian army units - the filter was fitted: image.jpg image.jpg
