Yes, that's right, he wants to know if Chev and Fraud CMP starters are the same or will interchange.

I think Phil has called it correctly. Dave

The reason I was asking if the Ford and GM starter are the same is because our Chevrolet C15A 13, the starter is defective and cannot be repaired.

A good friend has a Ford starter and was going to give to us. Now I am looking for a Chevrolet Starter. We are firing salutes for many Légions in Québec province and have no tractor for the second gun. Are Chev starter available ? Do they have a part number? I could use a defective one as long as the armature and field coil are good. Please help!!!! |

I just looked on Ebay Canada/ If you put in Chevrolet Starter 1942 there are a number for sale $50 to $100. Some are buy now so you can have one in your hands in a couple of days. Lang |

The starter from any of the following applications will do the job.

Almost any WW2 era Chevrolet truck whether 216 or 235 cubic inch. This includes CMP and G506 1-1/2 ton 4x4. Almost any WW2 era GMC truck using the 6 cylinder inline engine. This includes the GMC 6x6 2-1/2 ton and even the DUKW amphibian. Surely somebody near you will have a spare for one of these vehicle types. David

What size engine are you using...?

The 216 has a 6 volt special starter gear that needs to be matched to the ring gear. The 235 has a different starter gear and matching ring gear and is 12 volts. A good NAPA or Benson auto part store should be able to get you a rebuilt starter but will need to know if its for a Chev. mid 1950 235 12 volts or a 1942 - 49 216 6 volt starter. Look for the oldest guy at the parts counter. Cheers

I think you will find ANY GM starter will fit ANY GM OHV six engine from at least 1940 until about 1953 when they changed to 12v and 161 teeth. There is nothing special about the ring gear on the 216 and it is the same whether a 6 bolt or a 9 bolt truck flywheel (both 139 teeth). As Dave said the GMC starters had a bit more oomph to cater for the slightly bigger engine but still interchangeable. As you say Gilles will have to check the starter is off the earlier engines and not just ask for a Chevrolet 6 starter and end up with a 50's model. The 6 volt starter works just fine, in fact much better, wih 12 volt. I suspect half the CMP vehicles running around have 12 volt systems with no problems. The Jeep problem of smashing Bendix gears because of the violent throw in with 12 volt does not seem to happen with the Chevrolet CMP. Lang |
