Dave
I know the GMC ones had bigger torque but they are still fully compatible to put on the Chev engine (I am sure many a Chev starter has been put on a GMC but as you say may have to work a bit harder) Was it you who picked up the GMC starter for my Chev at Etreham from the dealer? Can't remember it spinning over faster but from your info it probably did. As I was whacking 12v through it suppose it is a moot point. Lang |

Hi Gilles
There is also a difference in the starter gear to match the ring gear, there is a difference in the number of teeth on ring gear as used with 12 starter depending on year, and there is a corresponding difference on the gear on the starter. But as ring gears can be changed, I've done it, you almost have to count the teeth. Depending on how worn the gears are they may interchange but they may also have trouble engaging. There is a old thread on MLU that I think has the tooth count. Cheers Phil

Just read the first post again and had a thought that Gilles might be trying to find a starter for a Ford and not for a Chev as we are assuming.
Feature Article from Hemmings Motor News October, 2011 - Jim O'Clair Finding a flywheel to fit your Chevrolet in the mid-Fifties used to be simple: There were only two possible units from 1942-'53. One flywheel (#3705385) covered all 1937-'53 cars and trucks with a 9 1/8-inch clutch disc and a six-bolt mounting pattern; the other (#3705387) covered all 1942-'53 cars and trucks with a 10-inch clutch disc and nine-bolt pattern. Both used 139-tooth ring gears for the starter. After 1953, Chevrolet changed to 12-volt starters, and the number of teeth on the ring gear was changed (161), but there are still just a few different flywheels used (excluding Hydra-Matic and Powerglide automatics). Some of these flywheels were used on models from the mid-Fifties up into the Eighties. Lang Last edited by Lang; 29-10-14 at 22:53. |

Yes, that's right, he wants to know if Chev and Fraud CMP starters are the same or will interchange.
I think Phil has called it correctly. Dave

The reason I was asking if the Ford and GM starter are the same is because our Chevrolet C15A 13, the starter is defective and cannot be repaired.
A good friend has a Ford starter and was going to give to us. Now I am looking for a Chevrolet Starter. We are firing salutes for many Légions in Québec province and have no tractor for the second gun. Are Chev starter available ? Do they have a part number? I could use a defective one as long as the armature and field coil are good. Please help!!!! |

Attached a picture of us 3BAM at the Canadian Field of Honnour, military Cemetary.
Now we will be only firing half of our task. Gilles Last edited by CWO (ret) Gilles Aubé; 04-12-15 at 17:17. |

The starter from any of the following applications will do the job.
Almost any WW2 era Chevrolet truck whether 216 or 235 cubic inch. This includes CMP and G506 1-1/2 ton 4x4. Almost any WW2 era GMC truck using the 6 cylinder inline engine. This includes the GMC 6x6 2-1/2 ton and even the DUKW amphibian. Surely somebody near you will have a spare for one of these vehicle types. David
