Chris,

Looks like a British Commonwealth plague. The Australian "State of the art" Collins Class submarines cost enough to pay off the entire European debt and have been non-operational for long periods and subject to trouble from day one.

One PR exercise to counter the terrible publicity saw the film crew on board for a live firing exercise. Sneaking up on the target the captain gave the order to fire and bells started going and nothing happened. On the subsequent TV programme they did not edit the captains voice in the the background saying "This thing is a piece of s..t!"

Remembering that like small arms, these things are built by the lowest bidder, to a budget.
Join the Navy and see the world (not as a sub mariner by the sounds of it)
Join the Army and clean it up.... or alternatively (while ignoring the Vietnam war poster of a soldier with hands full of hair) Join the army and get a head.

With all that has changed, "Nuthins changed"

But the RNZAF maritime squadron (P3's) just loved the Collins Class subs: it was the loudest thing in the water, so that even the less-than-up-to-date NZ Orion electronics could hear them slipping 'stealthily' through the depths!!!!

http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/...roversy-04563/

I remember seeing a company name at a defence trade show that I didn't recognize. They were some sort of major sponsor too. It took a while for me to learn that they were the major contractor for the sub' repairs. I doubt anyone would pick them out of a line up as big defence spending benefactors.
