Reinforcing strap
The lid top has a reinforcing steel strap attached, similar to that which you would find on the rations box.
If you have a look at the Stencil thread by B. Harris you can see the lid hasp exists on his example as well. Last edited by Michael R.; 24-06-12 at 18:27.

Yes, the MkI box has a padded canvas pad along the front of the lid where it angles up onto the top. It is retained by a brass strip front and back, riveted to the lid.

The version of the box used in the T-16 is similar. No doubt based on what was already in production at the time. And it has the pad on it. I stand on the lid all the time and it holds OK. I wouldn't jump up and down on it but it is fairly strong.
