Is it in a bridge too far, thatthey only had one plane, and the others were copies of the first one (identical marking's etc). I know it still doesn't explain the sand colour, but it might explain why there all the same. It was probably quiet sophisticated special effects for the time-that's assuming I'm thinking of the right film..
