Default Measurements.....

Hi Jim

I had a bad case of CFS...... been fighting a bad chest cold that is giving me coughing fits..... so I got some Codeine syrup which is great for taking trips without leaving the house....

Anyways, in the barn things seems to disappear at the best of time due to CFS fumes...... well I had a bad case and could not find my brand new NOS 1940 air filter.

Usually after an attack of CFS...... Can't Find Shit.... Grant will walk in the barn find the air filter then ask me.... would you pay $10 if I told you where it is.....????

So I found an old one I had repainted.... and took some photos and measurements.... it is exactly 8 inches wide...... so here is your extra clearance.... and when sitting on the table it is 5 3/4 inches high.

Throat size is the same on the original W 1 216 carb as on the early 261 carburator....... 2 5/16.

The inside stuffing is coarse horse hair or one hell of a batch of pubic hair.

Hope the pictures can help you find a replacement.

Boob
PS..... Cough cough wheeze glub glub..... wheeeeeee

Default Slightly Different From Mine

Hi

Looking at Bobs photo there are some differences from the one on my `45 HUP and `42 Pat 13 C60S. I believe that these two had their original air cleaners. primary difference is that both of mine attach to the Carb via a center bolt down into the carb.

Now my `41 Pat 12 C60L the air cleaner body attached to carb via the clamp as shown in Bobs photo.

I'll take some photos and measurements and post them.

Attached photos are of the original air cleaner from the `42 Pat 13 C60S. It is 8 3/4in Diameter Top 7 in Diameter Bottom and fits a carb throat of 2 5/16 OD.

I'll also do some looking in the CMP parts book and the Commercial Maple Leaf Truck Parts book to see if I can find a cross over.

Cheers Phil

Default Maybe.....

Hi Phil

I believe ALL W 1 carbs had a clamp style air breather like your cab 12...... I have never seen a W 1 carb with a center bolt....... now later Rochester carbs came with or without the centre long stem bolt...... most of the late 50 to early 60s Rochester where like that..... so maybe some one changed the air filter to match the after market carb.......

Will need to check the parts books with Grant.....

Comments anyone....?

Default Yep...at least two kind possibly 3....

Hi Phil

Early January 1941 shows only one model avaialble (cab11/12) 1525983.....
9" x 5 7/16

.late replaced by 1526795...listed in 1045 parts book.....same size as above...

....later replaced by 1543682..1 quart 8 3/4 x 6 11/32

....and of course two different type of Carter W 1 carbs.....
first type W -1 518S and 518SA

...second type.... called the "Dustproof Carb" W - 1 589S

Neither carbs are shown with a central long bolt that would hold the air filter.

Illustrations form the parts manual are useless as they were copies form civilian manuals with no attempt to show the military retro fit.....

More mysteries......

Default Type 3 with center rod

Hi Bob

Yup they kept making them better below are photos of W-1 with Dust Proof Top and Center bolt air cleaner hold down. My `45 HUP has one of these which I suspect is the original, little on that truck was changed. My `42 Pat 13 C60S also had one of these which is shown in picture, which might be a replacement.

In the picture with the other carbs you will note the rubber boot around the accelerator pump link, you will also note that it is no longer sealed to the top of the carb, unfortunately it didn't like the alcohol in the gas. The other two carbs are for a 261 and a 235/

I suspect that they went to the center bolt because it is a more secure way of holding the air cleaner on. Willing to bet that a lot of the clamp version were put back on and the clamps not tighten resulting in the air cleaners falling off spilling oil all over the manifold.

If any one is wondering why the maps as bench covers, every year I get a case of out of date maps from a friend.

Cheers Phil
