also I couldn't see much wrong with the outside shots. Any pictures of the interior? Ron

I don't know about British cans, but Canadian 2 gal. water cans were painted gray like this:

Edit: The number wasn't easy to read from the pictures, it's T297196.
Post the data plate information and we may be able to tell you more. Contract number, with serial number and month/year of manufacture.
