Yup they are home installed. They are actually cleats for horse shoes that you weld on. They work great but make it a little harder to steer. We had them on one of my dads carriers years ago. I have a few links here. I'll see if I can get a picture of them.

Yes there home made, my father removed the tracks and welded everyone of those cleats on so he could get better traction travelling cross the lakes. I believe this is the only U/C of the four that he did this with, which is the one George has.

Here is a picture of our back yard in 1947, looks like the setting for an invasion or a wrecking yard !
