It almost looks like a PIAT box, but for the life of me I can't find the pics of one I had, to compare. It's worth whatever a prospective buyer is willing to part with, depending on how badly they want it... there's no fixed price, even if you know what it's for.

It might be a Vickers/Lewis box. It's been a while since I looked, but on those they have a rounded section like that one, that can be turned over to suit the particular gun!

Thanks, I'll check that rounded piece and see if it flips over. Phil

Yes the rounded piece does come out and flip over, but the bottom side is smaller and does not have felt on it. It looks like it had fit something about 4 1/2" to 4 5/8" in diameter. The cover has provision for holding a cleaning rod or tool. An elderly friend dropped by and I showed him the box. He had fired a Piat during training. I like listening to the stories though, he described a fellow he met...Smokey Smith, who got a VC for knocking out 5 tanks on a bridge with a Piat. Phil

Default Aussie Vickers/Lewis Box

That is a Vickers/Lewis MG box. I have the exact same one. Its an Aussie manufactured one by the color of the wood inside the box.

I guess it's not an unknown box anymore . There was a barrel in it when I got it, it has a square end at the chamber, and I think it's 8mm. Thanks everyone. Phil

I just picked up the gun last month. Would the box be for sale or trade?
