Rob - as soon as I have my home computer problems sorted I had intended on trying to figure out how to turn them off - they're kind of redundant anyway.

I , by chance, noticed the same thing the other day . I clicked on somebody's Avatar by mistake , and I was party to all these intimate Visitor messages ...

I've finally found the options to turn OFF ' Visitor Messaging ' as well as the ' Social Groups ' and ' Friends ' sections, things which I don't think any of us really use (for instance, if you don't know who your friends are, you're probably in serious trouble
 ), so unless you have significant objections, I will do so in another 12 hours. Please save any messages you may wish to keep in the interim, and use PMs or the email function to contact other members privately.
