CMP kingpin bearings
I ran accross these in one of my parts boxes a little while ago. There has been a bit of discussion about these on the site, since they are no longer made. When they were available, they ran $200 each, which was what we used to pay for whole trucks and not for a single bearing.
Anyway, as should hopefully show in the photo, here is a set of four brand new shiny Aetna A-1570 bearings, which are direct replacements for the old New Departure 928. Price is **$old pending funds** shipped to Canada, slightly more to elsewhere on the Globe. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...r/DSCF0086.jpg Edited to add: the fourth one is sealed in the tin can, for any youngsters who have never seen a bearing come in anything other than plastiwrap or cardboard. Sold I assume.....
Hi Rob.......
I assume the *** indicate an "edit" to your email. Hot little commodity these bearings......... We suspect that they were used on the 28-32 Cadillac LaSalle as a King Pinn Bearing....last set of two sold on EBay for approx. $230 US........ The Ottawa Rotters have found a limited source in the UK for approx $100 each and in Texas for $140 US each....... At $400 + per front axle that implies that the selling price of any future CMP spare front axle will be around $500 speculating that the bearing are salvageable......... I am going to start to post guards around our CMP Cemetery in the back field. BooB

Yep, they are sold. I marked the contents of the ad as sold pending funds, but in fact the bearings are now shipped to their new owner in Ottawa, with the promise of payment forthcoming. After all, if you can't trust someone on this forum, who can you trust??. I found that with the used bearings, only two of them (I can't recall if it was the upper or the lower) would sustain the weight of the trick, and get all the wear. I also found that you could force fresh grease into the bearings, or on some of the brands, even pop them apart to clean out the mud and repack them.

New Bearings
Thanks to Max who has loaned me a ND928, which sits beside me here
 .I contacted AHR in July, about New Depature 928's (They took over the New Departure company). If we want the bearings remanufactured we would need to get a minimum order of 2000  made. Yep....that is enough for a lifetime... Knowing this, unless I had a firm order for 2000 or so, I would not proceed. Knowing that the alternatives are Aetna A-1570 bearings helps as I can approach another manufacturer and see if we can get less QTY made. If someone can vernier an old Aetna A-1570 for me ie thickness, and a photo etc etc, and PM the details dimensions & I will continue the great bearing hunt. Ian

Aetna bearings
Yes, I'm the buyer.
I have been on a quest for ND928 or equivalent bearings, not because I have an immediate, known need but rather because steering, like brakes are areas I don't personally want to take a chance with. The Aetna bearings have been seen to fit Bob Carriere's front axle but according to a polite lady at Aetna's sales office are discontinued and completely out of their distribution system. I've been hunting through period 1946 ND catalogues as well as application lists and haven't found reference to the ND928. Either it was a special, or had already been discontinued???? There was a recent Ebay listing for Cadillac Lasalle Kingpin bearings that looked very similar to the 928. The seller couldn't/wouldn't describe any markings on the bearing that might have confirmed identity. They went for about $US250 for a pair. One local bearing supply specialist said that they would do a search for me to see if the ND928 or Aetna A1570 could be found. No luck after a month and a half, but they were enough into service to call and tell me that they'd failed. When I sketched the section of the bearing for another supplier, they said it looked like a thrust bearing that used to be used in tractors. A third supplier has told Bob Carriere that he can't find replacement bearings, but that as long as the existing races are good, they can be rebuilt with new balls. An internet search (actually quite a bit of searching) unearthed a broker in Texas who had 7 (I think) Aetnas available for the sum of $US180 each. More than I was willing to spend "in case of". As Rob said, be nice to your bearings, take care of them so you won't have to go questing for replacements that are getting rarer and more expensive.

The bearings used to be stocked under NSN 3110-00-158-6691. There are surplus distributers in the USA who have a network to deal with surplus stuff and will give quoted based on NSN. A google search will bring some of them up.
Here I found a couple hundred of these bearings contracted for by the US military over the years at this page: http://www.partslogistics.com/demo/s...e=nsn&x=10&y=5 Another search on another site shows this NSN to be cancelled. The NSN also lists about 6 or 7 different part numbers for this bearing with twice that in manufacturers. Part numbers include : 928 A1570 K5756 1828X37 6113 1760-011 or 1760-0011 1228GG267 Price listed back in 1984 was $68 I can research it some more with regards to what manufacturers used those part numbers, but at present my NSCM pages are downstairs somewhere. ND928 Obsolete???
I looked up the NSN of the ND928 in the NATO MACRL but they are maked as obsolete (1959? or 1960 something?).
Rob's extra numbers may allow a better idea of whats out there, and availability. Especially globally. Thanks for your efforts. I feel better than I did looking at the front end and wondering about a bearing, and if it was a 'show stopper'. Thanks again to MLU Ian
