Chris all the photos I have including WW2 one's show these plates in place so I don't think it is a post war Swiss modification.

... Cliff, you're correct. I googled a little bit an all pics I've seen have this plate too. Hmm, shame on me

Well, perhabs something is written in the Maintenance Manual TM-9-1796 (23 MB). On page 4 these plates are clearly visible.
