Hi Grant,
Nice find. I have a box like that although the height measures 7 7/8". Stamped on the front, below the latch, in 5/8" letters is: CHEST, AMMUNITION CAL 50, M17 D39091 Cheers, Brian |

The box remains the property of Guy, he seems to have a talent for spotting "green objects of interest". The dimensions I gave were more or less interior dimensions for the main part of the box, adding for the depth of the lid would make your box and Guy's almost identical in size. This box didn't seem to have evidence of stamping or embossing, or seem to have enough paint to hide all traces of it. It could easily be for the same use or be a similar box for another purpose. Thank you for the clue.

I have closely examined the box and have worked on it to bring out any lettering that might be found.
I found no stampings on the box..... I have not yet uncovered every square inch. I have however cut through the top layer of black paint on the front of the box which has revealed some stencilling in about 3/4 block letters. I can read **Chest AMMUNTION** CAL. 50 ???? D39091 A rust mark after 50..... blots out the letters/numbers. ****************Edited to show correct stencilling on box......**************** That's it so far. It was a fine long weekend in Hammond (there will be some activity on Dominion Day, but I won't be there, but in Merrickville with the S&P gang). On the weekend, Grant, Bob and I attended to some small tasks while the rain came down. Guy Vapeur stopped by (see above threads) and sold off some of his finds. We hope to see more of Guy in the future with a view to forming the "Hammond Quartet"...Lunch at Chez Marie was as good as usual and fortified us for the afternoon fun and games.
When it wasn't raining, we loaded my HUP on the trailer for the Monday run to the muffler shop in downtown Orleans (east end of Ottawa). Bob left the barn early to sort out some windows for his rear deck. I parted company around 2:30 PM as the heat and humidity peaked. Today (Monday), saw Bob and I running the HUP to the shop. We ditched the HUP and had breakfast at the Cozy Nest in Orleans - I know, it's sort of cheating on Chez Marie, but a change is as good as a rest...Back at the barn, the sun broke cover and we decided to do some sandblasting. Bob cleaned up his front end sheet metal and I got my doghouse and a small floor plate cleaned up. Duty called me home for some work related telephone calls, and I met Bob at the muffler shop later that afternoon to retrieve the HUP. After paying Dan the Muffler Man for his good work, Bob hauled the HUP back to Hammond, where we off-loaded and called it a day. The heavens opened up just as we put the HUP back into its shelter. Many thanks, Bob. It is good to have friends who share the same interests, and more importantly, friends who have a truck and trailer. Bob's time and effort were very much appreciated! Now I have no excuse for putting the body on the frame, except maybe a second coat of paint - if it ever stops raining here. As mentioned, Dan the Muffler Man had his hands all over my HUP's frame today. The fellows at the shop were quite impressed with the HUP, thinking it would make a good swamper or off-road/rock crawler... Bob mentioned that the good folks of Orleans were somewhat baffled with his trailer load - being good liberals, they shook with fear when they caught a glimpse of the the OD paint and immediately went home and called their MPs to demand a cut in the defence budget...fortunately, we don't have a thief, er, liberal MP, so we should be OK for the time being.
The thumbnails show the HUP waiting for the trip perched up on Bob's trailer, and a shot of the new pipes.

Rob.. Nice job..Just an observation that will save you some vexation down the road.. Turn your muffler clamps 90 Degrees so that the nuts can be easily accessed once the body is on..A rookie mistake but easily fixed at this point..do it before they become heated and the metal atains new memory.. .. Retighten after a couple of hours run time.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Sage advice. Dan the Muffler Man placed the clamps tits-up to remind me to tighten them once I am happy with the final positioning. He left some wiggle room if I didn't like the set up - a real pro, our Dan. Prior to the great "mating" of body and frame, I will adjust the clamps just so. By the way, it is good to "hear" from you - it seems we lost you for a spell (or maybe I should venture out of the Resto Forum more often...),
