Staghound Armoured Car details

Hello there

Attached is a photo of a 12 Manitoba Dragoons Staghound driving past a King Tiger.

My question is, what is the function of those mesh-topped square boxes at the lower outer edge of the rear fenders.

Smoke dischargers?
