These are TJ Richards (Adelaide) built Dodge cabs pictured in Melbourne during WW2. The wagons are South Australian broad gauge 5 feet 3 inch. South Australia had three rail guages in use.- 3'6" , 4'8.5" and 5'3" . On the wagons is stencilling ' MAY USE IN VICTORIA ' Victoria still uses 5'3" gauge today. The gauge screwup happened because of the Colonial rivalries of the 1800s. Before 1901 Australia was made up of separated Colonies with border customs controls.
Tasmania and Queensland are 3 feet 6 inch gauge as is West. Australia. NSW is Standard gauge 4 feet 8 1/2 inch . Victoria is broad gauge same as Ireland. South Australia used a mixture of all 3 gauges. 427/07 WW2 TRUCK CABINS LOADED ONTO SOUTH AUSTRALIAN F CLASS WAGONS SPENCER STREET YARD; GLS; RAILWAY; FREIGHT https://prov.vic.gov.au/archive/2E82...B9A63D?image=1
