Hi Craig, I have yet to answer your email. I will.
Craig I have converted one to a modern paper element. I used an AF437K.
I un riveted and removed the ring from inside the pump end and introduced a spring to hold the element seal to the other end of the housing.
The element is loaded by un bolting the alloy end, dropping in the spring and then the element, then refitting the alloy end.
I did this for my (riveted) carrier which has a single filter and is inside the engine cover. The opening in the housing faces down and so the modern element cannot be seen. It may not suit you.
