Default C 60 CV Joint

Hi, Can anyone tell me what acceptable wear would be normal in the CV joint ?
I have just stripped down a front axle assembly to see if it was worth keeping.
It had been exposed in the weather a long time before I obtained it & I was concerned it may have been rusty inside. I did get some good brake shoes & four good thrust bearings etc. I was hoping to get a spare set of axles, but there is a considerable amount of end play in the CV joint. It is not so bad that the joint will come apart, but I was wondering where this "play" goes when the assembly is working. Obviously the wheel bearings lock up the wheel end of the shaft, but where does the "play " go in the other half of the axle. The unit was working OK before being taken out of the vehicle. I would appreciate your comments. Ken.

Hi again. What I was referring to above is the end play, that is the amount the CV joint can be extended. Is this amount caused by wear on the balls etc. If the joint cannot be pulled apart lengthwise, is it still fit for use. Your comments would be appreciated. Ken.
