Rich, threaded rod comes as free cutting mild steel, and high tensile.
The free cutting mild steel is easy to cut because it has a higher percentage of lead, which makes it weaker than mild steel. Good engineering supply outlets would be able to supply clevis pins even if you have to "port and polish" them. Don't use threaded rod please. I might be riding in your carrier!
