Lynn,
I wasn't implying that this Loyd was built in 1940, rather that Loyd production as a whole began in 1940. I would say that the one in question is a 41 or 42 example. Easy to check by looking at the casting dates on the wheels, bogies and brake drums. The bogies and return rollers match the type seen in early war Loyd photos so are probably original to the vehicle. Some time between 1942 and 1943 the Loyd was given an upgrade with beefed up back axle, strengthened chassis, new dash, new engine cover sides and most noticeably a different lighting arrangement with one headlight and two side lights. I saw an original Loyd on Saturday which had just been brought back to the UK from Europe, totally original and displaying some details I have not seen before. Sadly no serial numbers or traces of the War Dept number remained so it only added to Loyd confusion rather than clearing any up. Someone needs to write a book!
