The fan on them is symetrical (like a siren fan) most alternators have an asymetrical fan ( for example Bosch alternators often have 3 larger blades on one side, balanced by four smaller ones on the other) because of this they "sing" Maybe you have spent too long at the range, using "Bilsom" in your ears. I'm sure other ex eme mechs know what i'm talking about.
