An ancedote, while in the Forces I was the Life Cycle Material Manager for tire changing equipment and we were in Valcartier trying a new machine to remove run flats and change tires on AVGPs/LAVs. To remove or install a run flat( a smaller diameter solid rubber tire) you must bend the run flat in two and push it into the tire. We were very safety cautious as we did not know the new machine.
We had the run flat bent in two, tied with a heavy strap and were in the process of inserting it into the tire when the strap broke, the run flat launched, hit the ceiling, bounced into the next isle, bounced again and ended up on the other side of the garage next the office complex. Luckily we were working during lunch hour and there were few people in the garage. Believe me the Workshop CWO had more than a few choice words to say, the next day under his supervision we were shown how to do it in a safe manner, until when removeing the run flat it went flying again. This time it hit the wall and then the tire machine, breaking a support arm. End of demonstration.
Lesson learned, beware of multi piece tires and cheap straps.
