Oil Filter on the Flathead.

I was prepping a flathead yesterday for installation in my carrier, and removed the oil filter assembly, as it wouldn't fit into the stock engine covers. I traced the return line on the filter to make sure it didn't supply the filtered oil to something important, and, as you mentioned, the return oil simply goes through a hole in the bottom of the block and into the pan.

My engine is a later 8BA engine (49-53). Your oil return may be located in a different spot.
