Gordons, I know the type of manual you are desribing, they let you enter by one model and find what other makes and models used the same parts. One brand name I know of in this field is Hollanders Interchange Manuals, did the Mitchell series of shop manuals also do the same thing?

I think the Master Parts Catalogs that Phil is describing were published by the automakers and covered a range of years and models. An exampe is the "Master Parts Catalog" published by Chevrolet for the "1929-1948 Six - Cylinder Models". This only deals in parts described in the Chevrolet system.
Using horns as an example, there are 11 models listed in the years covered. They include some that were one year only, others used for 10 model years, high and low notes, some that were for few models, some that were for "all".
