I should imagine the mistake to be Fords.... The Army clearly did not want the D hence the painted out examples in the pictures.

I wonder if it stood for Dearborn?

Hello the wheel with rounds holes are specific for British Loyd carrier, but are used on Universal carrier ..

Glad to hear confirmation on the TD being a proper part of the census numbers. There is a real lack of good information on the T-16s and we are all still learning about their history during the war. Hopefully someone will come across more of the original British wartime records related to their unit assignments.

Looking through the message thread I noticed I never added a shot of my own carrier. It was sold off to the Swiss after the war and when I got it, everything was striped and the remains were a rusty mess. Serial Number is 5399 with the FS number being 5488. Date stamped by the serial number is 1-44 and the Census/ORD number is TD97377.

Greetings all: The T16 hulk we have at S&P is pretty rough. I'll try to post a photo sometime. I have found a couple of hulls so if I can acquire one we may be able to put one whole T16 together.

According to a write up in the book 'Fighting Vehicle & Weapons of Rhodesia 1965 - 80' (2nd Edition), pg 90, by Peter G Lockr and Peter DF Cooke it states the following. 'T16 Universal Carriers served with the RAR in Kenya from 1944, when they were described as "fearsome clanking monsters", and with the Southern Rhodesian Forces post war. They carried the flash, three assegai, of the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland Army. In mid 1970's one was exhumed from its museum resting place and returned to active service. It was given an armoured superstructure onto which were fitted 2 x twin machine gun mounts (Bren gun mounts). Fitted for radio, it was used for airfield defence but the tracks and running gear were considered too geriatric and high maintenance for anything more arduous or long range. This is the only info I have found so far on these vehicles in Rhodesia.

Cut-down T16 turned into a log skidder or bush buggy of some sort.

The T16 at Black gang chime went to Ronald Trusscet in the 90's.

Ronald had a wonderful carrier museum with every kind of carrier. When he pasted the museum was broken up. He was a lovely man and knew so much about carriers. He is the reason so many survived.

Hello Barry, thanks for mentioning Ronald (Ron) Truscott. His name is mentioned over on HMVF and here - it certainly seems he led an interesting life.

As far as I can tell, Blackgang Chine's other playground attractions have found new owners, too.
