Calgary Regiment
Trying to identify a list of names used by the Calgary regiment, especially Churchills.
Although mainly trying to confirm if the name "Asp" was used. Only reference is a slightly blurred photo with WD T32417 and a chalked "Asp" on the side. Anybody help? Mark, any thoughts? Cheers Kevin |

Dieppe Landings
In "The Candian Soldier" by Jean Bouchery there is a list of Churchills that landed on Dieppe. These tanks were part of the 14 Army Tank Regiment (Calgary Rgt). Unfortunately it doesn't list the numbers of C Squadron-tanks.

Can you post the photo please. Also, "A" Squadron of the Calgary Regiment used the letter 'A' for their tank names. Cheers

Asp
Hi Mark,
Sadly the photo is not mine to post but can be found at the bottom of the page of http://www.track48.com/Reviews/articles/na75/index.html I already have "Adjunct", "Amaze", "Amos", "Ant" and "Arrant" listed as A Sqn tanks ( all Shermans). Thanks for your reply. Also thanks to Harold for the other names and numbers. Cheers Kevin |

The Churchill in the photos under the title 'A NASTY MESS' on the website you linked to does not belong to the Calgary Regiment. If you look at the AoS plate, there is the white 2" inch Army Troops bar below. I think the Churchill in the photo belongs to a regiment of one of the British Army's Churchill equipped 'Army Tank Brigades' who in 1942-1943 used the AoS serial block 173 to 176 with the 2" inch white bar below denoting 'Army Troops'. Cheers

ASP
Hi Mark,
Thank you for pointing the bar out, I had not noticed it. However that now leaves me with a problem. 175 with bar below was 48th RTR? My name database has 36 Churchill's belonging to 48th RTR, all begining with the letter T. Going on the A for 1st RTR, B for 2nd RTR principle. Perhaps ASP were initials for something? Any thoughts? Cheers Kevin |

The '175' AoS serial, with white bar below, could be any one of a number of units, depending on which Army Tank Brigade the Churchill in the photo is from. I, myself, started by looking at the 21st Army Tank Brigade. I've been looking at the RTR battalions also, but one it doesn't belong to is the 48th RTR, I have their history and yes, all names start with the letter "T". I'm also looking at the North Irish Horse, but nothing yet. The 'ASP', could very well be 'initials', as in 'As Soon as Possible', or it could very well turn out to be a 'name'. I will keep looking. I've seen an image of a Churchill before with "ASP" on it, but just can't, at the moment, remember where I've seen it before. Cheers

I have the name ASP as a Churchill belonging to 51st RTR, T68384 ( Mr Churchill's Tank ) also T172439 probably a replacement tank. North Irish Horse named all of their tanks after Irish cities, towns and villages. So I would pass on that one. I would be interested in any names that you may come across for my database. Currently 2900+ names. Cheers Kevin |

This could very well be a tank of 51 RTR, the AoS serial of '175' corresponds to their placement within the 25th Army Tank Brigade (serials 173 to 176)(UK/N. Africa/Italy 1942-1944). The W.D. number on this one is T32417. A couple more Churchill names for "A" Sqn, 51 RTR Achilles, Apollo, Adventurer, Audacious and Arrogant and three for "C" Sqn, Centaur, Centurion and Cyclops. Cheers
